acoustic waypoints

From Ramsgate to the ohio river valley

A beta version of Acoustic Waypoints premiered at Slingshot in Athens, GA in the Spring of 2014.  The mature version that you see here premiered in January of 2015 at MINT Gallery’s Here to Go exhibition, a juried show of regional emerging artists, where it was awarded Best in Show.  Two player pianos are connected by a loop of paper.  The holes in the paper that generate the code for the player papers is text that has been converted to braille.  Rather than the raised dots used for functional braille, these dots have been punched through creating an unreadable text.  The text itself is from a letter from an ancestor of mine writing in the 19th century to another relative about whether or not he should come to America.  This complex text is reduced to a binary code so that the language can be sonified and visualized but unreadable, creating a new constructed experience of the text.
