Point of Beginning

While legal definitions of property can reduce a complex abstract concept to a concrete legal contract,  the ideas behind those practices have been created through culture and historical precedence.   An installation exploring the different forms of survey conventions, Point of Beginning recontextualizes the legal nomenclature that defines space and property. The wall text uses a meats and bounds description to generate a boundary for a piece a property represented by the stack of paper on the floor. The surface of the paper is equal to the area of the land and has been stamped with the lot and block survey markings. The land of the artist’s childhood home is reduce to the volume of the paper and the words on the wall.
