The difference between something and nothing, presence and absence is one that is understood through our experience of time and space. The Cartography of Presence/ The Cartography of Absence considers the question of how that contrast emerges and what are the minimal requirements to perceive something or nothing. Those two circumstances work together to create the difference that gives the impression of one or the other. Using the interval between two passing trains, the border between two pieces of property and photographs of nothing and yet something, the installation creates encounters at the threshold between the two. The cyanotype accordion book, the silver printed photographs, the audio played by the viewer on the record player, are all indexical traces of that encounter that proves it’s real.
